Unity & Preservation

Since our inception, ICOB has been a beacon of unity and cultural preservation. Our annual conventions stand out as crucial moments of connection, bringing Banyakigezi from around the globe together. These gatherings not only facilitate networking but also provide a platform for sharing experiences, promoting our rich culture, and fostering a sense of community.

Our History

Late 1990s – Early 2000s
The Spark
  • A chance encounter at Heathrow Airport between Peter Bikangaga and Andrew Katarikawe highlights how Banyakigezi relied on coincidence to reconnect.

  • Conversations in Toronto reveal the community’s need for deliberate efforts to stay connected in the diaspora.

2003
The First Convention (Toronto, Canada)
  • July 3–6, 2003: The inaugural ICOB Convention is held in Toronto.

  • Attendees include delegations from Uganda, USA, UK, Denmark, and Canada.

  • Theme: “Okumanyana” (Knowing one another), reflecting inclusivity and openness.

  • High-level Ugandan dignitaries participate.

  • Decisions made: Establishment of ICOB International as an umbrella organization.

  • Local chapters are formed across communities, and elections conducted for leadership.

  • Membership opened to all Banyakigezi and friends/supporters.

2004
The Washington DC Convention
  • ICOB hosts its second convention in Washington, D.C.

  • A landmark session addresses the Bafuruki crisis, presented by Silver Tweyongyere.

  • Inspired by this, the Kigezi Education Fund (KEF) is launched — ICOB’s flagship project.

2005 – 2022
Growth & Global Presence
  • Annual conventions continue across the world, fostering cultural preservation and development.

  • ICOB solidifies itself as a beacon of unity, with conventions becoming vital spaces for networking, cultural promotion, and community-building.

  • Local chapters expand, laying groundwork for future regional collaborations.

  • ICOB funds vocational and ICT centers in Kigezi through the KEF.

2023
20 Years of ICOB (Boston, USA)
  • ICOB celebrates two decades of impact at the Boston Convention (2023).

  • Theme: “Innovative Healthcare Collaborations in Kigezi.”

  • Milestone: Reflection on two decades of unity, growth, and contributions.

2024
Consolidating the Future (London, UK)
  • 19th Annual Convention held from July 25–29, 2024, at the Hilton London Syon Park.

  • Theme: “Consolidating our gains, building towards a sustainable future.”

  • Focus on creating the ICOB Uganda Chapter, investing in ICT projects, expanding the Karwemera Archives, and supporting the Language Academy.

A Living Legacy
  • ICOB stands as a 20-year-old global movement, a symbol of enduring unity and strength.

Organizational Structure of ICOB

ICOB Inc., a registered 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, D.C., serves as the umbrella body for the International Community of Banyakigezi.

The organization is led by an elected President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Board of Directors, all of whom oversee daily operations and provide strategic guidance.

Supporting this leadership is the Council of Elders, composed of past presidents and distinguished community members. The Council offers wisdom, strategic counsel, and continuity to ensure the organization remains aligned with its mission and vision.

At the grassroots level, ICOB operates through regional chapters, each led by its own President, Vice President, and Secretary. While chapters enjoy semi-autonomous decision-making and set their own priorities, they operate within the framework of ICOB’s bylaws to maintain unity across the organization.

The organization is led by an elected President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and a Board of Directors who oversee daily operations and guide policy.

Supporting this leadership is the Council of Elders, composed of past presidents and distinguished community members. These provide wisdom, strategic counsel. And , continuity .

At the grassroots level, ICOB operates through regional Chapters, each headed by its own President, Vice President, and Secretary. While Chapters enjoy semi-autonomous decision-making and set their own priorities, they operate within the framework of the ICOB Bylaws to ensure unity of mission and vision.

Peninah was not just a mother to her biological children but embraced many others she encountered in her journey. 

Dr Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the former Governor of the Bank of Uganda, received an honorary tribute as one of the foremost stewards of Uganda’s economy and a distinguished ICOB Patron.

Festo Karwemera was a fervent advocate for Kigezi culture and language, embodying the spirit of a dedicated Munyakigezi patriot.

These extraordinary individuals ignited the spark that propelled ICOB into existence. Without their vision and tireless dedication, the organization would not have been born.

Peninah Kyohirwe Ngategize (1958 – 2022)

Peninah was not just a mother to her biological children but embraced many others she encountered in her journey. She held the role of a friend to numerous individuals, offering valuable counsel and earning the trust of those who confided in her.

As a Liaison between ICOB Apex and COB Uganda, she excelled in facilitating smooth interactions, showcasing her reliability and exceptional skills in the role. Her commitment to upholding values like integrity was evident in her various endeavours, particularly in uplifting communities, with a focus on empowering women through financial and computer literacy programs that she passionately supported.

Despite her numerous accomplishments, she remained humble and approachable, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Dr. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile (1949 – 2022)

Dr Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile, the former Governor of the Bank of Uganda, received an honorary tribute as one of the foremost stewards of Uganda’s economy and a distinguished ICOB Patron.

Widely respected for his intellect, personal courage, and outstanding leadership qualities, he was renowned for his ability to speak truth to power and for inspiring dedication and professionalism in those he worked with.

In the Kigezi region, he stood as a towering figure, dedicating himself to the development of the Banyakigezi. His reputation for generosity and approachability extended beyond words, as he actively supported associations working to uplift the community. Notably, he contributed significantly to the Kigezi Education Fund (KEF) with personal donations and played a pivotal role in establishing the Uganda Chapter of ICOB in 2009.

Omugurusi Festo Karwemera (1925 – 2020)

Festo Karwemera was a fervent advocate for Kigezi culture and language, embodying the spirit of a dedicated Munyakigezi patriot.

His commitment to advancing culture was evident in his prolific writings, which eloquently preserved the rich history and traditions of Kigezi’s diverse tribes. Those fortunate to meet him recall the wisdom he imparted through humor, proverbs, and captivating storytelling.

His legacy is one of unparalleled integrity and selflessness. He generously invested his time and resources into publishing scholarly works that continue to preserve and promote Kigezi’s cultural heritage — all without seeking financial reward.

Dr. & Mrs. Muniini Mulera

These extraordinary individuals ignited the spark that propelled ICOB into existence. Without their vision and tireless dedication, the organization would not have been born.

Their deep love for people, unwavering generosity, and relentless optimism transformed an idea into a reality that continues to unite Banyakigezi around the world. Their contributions extended beyond their benevolence, encompassing intellectual curiosity, eloquence, and a wealth of knowledge.

ICOB expresses its deepest gratitude for their invaluable service. Their selfless efforts have shaped the trajectory of ICOB and positively impacted countless lives, reflecting their ethos of helping without expecting anything in return.
